Benefits of Tankless Water Heaters | Navien

Unlike conventional tank water heaters, tankless water heaters heat the water on demand… every time you turn on a hot water faucet. Today’s tankless units can supply endless hot water during use, and not waste energy heating water when it is not needed. Manufacturers like Navien build tankless units that meet the demands of most applications, and plumbing contractors, builders, building owners, homeowners and engineers are adopting them as the standard in residential, commercial and multifamily projects.

Greater Efficiency & Lower Utility Costs

Navien condensing tankless water heaters are Energy Star Certified and have ultra-high energy efficiency ratings of up to 0.96 UEF. On average, conventional water heaters are 30 percent less efficient than tankless. This means (depending on hot water usage) significantly lower bills for energy usage when using a Navien condensing tankless water heater.

Plus, Navien tankless water heaters reduce energy consumption, lower CO2 emissions, and condensing models have low exhaust temperatures which allow the use of less expensive PVC venting in most applications. This also adds up to lower energy bills and much less impact on the health of the planet.

Endless Hot Water

Perhaps the most important innovation of the Navien tankless water heater is the endless supply of hot water when you need it and for as long as you need it. Unlike conventional tank water heaters, the Navien tankless water heater doesn’t rely on a storage tank of a limited supply of heated water. There is no waiting for a storage tank to warm up.

How do the Navien tankless water heater systems work?

  1. When a hot water tap is opened, water starts to flow through the tankless water heater.

  2. The tankless unit detects the flow, and starts the ignition process.

  3. The burner is quickly lit and starts to heat the water to the required set point.

  4. As flow continues, the built-in controls monitor flow, inlet, and outlet temperatures to adjust operation.

  5. The tankless controls will operate to maintain consistent outlet temperature, even with changing demand.

  6. When flow stops, the controls shut the burner down and reset the unit to standby mode, waiting for the next demand.

Longer Service Life & Warranty

Navien offers one of the industry’s strongest warranties. Navien was the first tankless water heater to provide strong and dependable dual stainless steel heat exchangers. With proper installation, application, and maintenance, this leading-edge design assures that Navien water heaters will provide years of energy efficient service and can have a longer life expectancy than conventional tank water heaters.

Application Labor Parts Heat Exchanger
Residential Standard or controlled recirculation 1 year 5 years 15 years
Uncontrolled Recirculation 1 year 3 years 5 years
Commercial or Combi* Standard or controlled recirculation 1 year 5 years 8 years
Uncontrolled recirculation 1 year 3 years 3 years

* Combi refers to a combination portable water and space heating application. Water heaters cannot be used in space heating-only applications.

Space-Saving Design

Typical tankless water heaters take about 80 percent less space than bulky conventional tanks. Not only will you be saving money, but you’ll have more space in your household with the sleek compact design.

Low Maintenance

Like all water heating products, tankless water heaters require some maintenance to ensure proper operation, peak efficiency, and product longevity. Navien tankless water heaters can last more than 20 years with proper maintenance. Navien recommends regular annual maintenance to make sure your tankless water heater is performing at the highest level. Installation variables like water quality, set temperature, and water usage can affect the frequency of maintenance. Installing scale prevention products, like the Navien PeakFlow, or a water softener system to keep mineral deposits from collecting on heat exchangers will help keep maintenance at a minimum.

Improved Safety

All Navien tankless water heaters are designed and built to provide long lasting and safe operation. Navien units are certified by CSA, which is a third-party testing agency, to meet all industry standards for safe operation. Built in controls monitor water temperatures, exhaust gas temperature, and the burner to verify correct operation, and will disable the unit in the event of any unsafe condition.

Navien is the only manufacturer to add a Vent Installation Detector, which verifies proper connection of the exhaust pipe to the unit. In addition, Navien units are certified by AHRI for efficiency ratings, NSF and AB1953 (California) for low lead, and SCAQMD for low NOX.

Navien Reduces Installation & Set-Up Time

Navien tankless water heaters can reduce installation time compared to other tankless units thanks to options for ½” gas piping and 2” PVC venting in most applications. Navien NPE-2 units can be set up fast and easily by a Navien professional contractor with the EZNav intuitive control and Set-up Wizard software. With built in components and controls a dedicated recirculation line or a NaviCirc valve can be added to the system, for faster hot water delivery to the fixtures.

Reliable Hot Water & No “Cold Water Sandwiches”

Navien tankless water heaters are always ready to provide endless hot water. Navien’s patented ComfortFlow® system on NPE tankless water heaters is the first to include a buffer tank, recirculation pump and multiple controls options into a tankless water heater, resolving the cold-water sandwich effect*, reducing wait times for hot water (reducing water waste), and issues of minimal flow rates commonly found in other tankless water heaters.

* The “cold-water sandwich effect” is the undesired introduction of cold water into the hot water supply line on occasions of frequent on/off operations. (Measure Guideline : Transitioning to a Tankless Water heater, DOE, Sept.2012).

Is a Tankless Water Heater Worth It?

Tankless water heaters last longer, lower energy bills, and provide an endless supply of hot water. Installation cost of a tankless water heater varies for each installation, but with the rising cost of tank water heaters the difference in cost for installation between the two has greatly reduced. Couple that with the utility bill savings of a tankless water heater and it makes the switch to tankless worth the initial investment. Navien tankless water heaters are the future for residential and commercial water heating.
