Situation
Southport Health and Rehabilitation Center in Southport, NC was struggling with their water heating system. For more than two years, the 1,350,000 BTU standing pilot outside boiler and 1,000 gallon storage tank were constantly leaking, which kept the facility from having enough hot water for patient rooms, laundry service and showers. The low efficiency of the massive boiler caused high utility bills that Southport was looking to lower with a new high-efficiency system.
Solution
T.A. Woods Company was called on to construct a new system that would provide the Center with endless hot water at a much more efficient rate than their old system, while hopefully taking up less physical space in the boiler room. T.A. Woods worked with Scott Robinson, Outside Sales Rep from Ludwig, Smith and Walker and Jeff Hubeny, Navien East Coast Commercial Sales Manager to engineer a new system using Navien NPE series high-efficiency condensing tankless water heaters.
The new water heating system was built using 8 Navien NPE-A condensing tankless water heaters which include an exclusive ComfortFlow™ system with built-in recirculation pump and buffer tank. The space-saving units were mounted back-to-back on a racking system to take up less footprint, cascaded to share the work load and prolong the life of the system, and common vented to reduce the number of wall penetrations needed for venting. T.A. Woods used Navien Ready-Link Manifold Systems that complemented the back-to-back unit installations for easy construction of water and gas lines to each unit.

Since installing the new Navien tankless water heater system, Southport Health and Rehabilitation Center has not once had to worry about running out of hot water and their gas consumption is way lower since the tankless system only uses gas when there is a call for hot water and doesn’t constantly burn like the old boiler system. The switch to tankless water heaters freed up a lot of space in the boiler room and the add-on NaviLink Wi-Fi accessory that T.A. Woods installed gives the owners peace of mind by allowing them to monitor their system from wherever they are.
